At 12:33am this morning, the New York City Council approved the City’s $88.2 billion adopted budget for Fiscal Year 2021. Nonprofit New York is grateful to the over 250 nonprofit advocates who called on the City to save discretionary funding for grassroots nonprofits led by people of color, and to Councilmembers who fought to make sure this funding was not fully removed.
Dear Nonprofit New York members, partners, and friends,
We wish we had words that could provide meaningful respite from the mix of outrage, despair, exhaustion, fear, or weariness you and your teams are feeling today.
We are not sure such words exist, but this we know for sure: We denounce the violence against Black communities across our country and in our own city and state.
New York’s nonprofits have been nothing short of extraordinary during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonprofit New York sees you and applauds the ways you have innovated, adapted, and stepped up in the face of this devastating crisis. With no map for navigating these uncharted and uncertain times, you have put your mission and communities first, managed immense change with no lead time, and found ways to respond to increased needs with diminished resources.
Nonprofit New York is pleased the House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act on May 15, and particularly grateful to the New York Delegation for advocating for reforms to support all nonprofits. However we must caution our constituents that this bill faces significant challenges from the Senate and the following provisions in the HEROES Act are not law.
