Nonprofit New York convenes the voices of the sector to represent the issues the sector cares most about. Nonprofit New York represents and engages with nonprofit organizations across all subsectors, from start-ups to organizations with centuries of experiences, from groups that run with the help of a handful of volunteers to corporations with many hundreds of employees, from organizations that are focused on a particular community to organizations that work with dizzyingly diverse groups of people.

The Coalition to Advance Nonprofits (CAN) is a sector-wide coalition of over 100 nonprofits that was formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis, coordinated by Nonprofit New York. CAN coordinates federal, state, and city advocacy impacting the sector and is grounded in Nonprofit New York’s Declaration of Nonprofit Rights: 1) a right to be powerful forces for change, 2) a right to sustainable financial resources to fulfill our responsibility to serve our communities well, 3) a right to engage in advocacy and a responsibility to share our expertise, and 4) a right to champion equity and support and sustain an equitable workforce.
Nonprofit New York’s Government Relations Council (GRC) meets monthly to consider and, where appropriate, comment on legislative and regulatory developments affecting New York's nonprofit sector. The council has 100 members, including nonprofit general counsel and law firm partners specializing in nonprofit law. The GRC interacts regularly with government officials, including heads of city and state agencies, the Charities Bureau of the New York State Attorney General, and elected officials. The GRC uses its voice to amplify the concerns of the sector.
