At 12:33am this morning, the New York City Council approved the City’s $88.2 billion adopted budget for Fiscal Year 2021. Nonprofit New York is grateful to the over 250 nonprofit advocates who called on the City to save discretionary funding for grassroots nonprofits led by people of color, and to Councilmembers who fought to make sure this funding was not fully removed. We are disappointed that the Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund received a disproportionate reduction of 32% from Fiscal Year 2020, compared to a 19% overall reduction in discretionary funding. We continue to call on our City leaders to center racial equity and the leadership of Black and people of color organizations in the coming months throughout our City’s recovery.
Nonprofits are powerful. As connections to grassroots communities, providers of public goods and critical services, employers, and economic drivers. We are proud of the tireless advocacy so many nonprofits have done and continue to do to demand the respect, support, and inclusion nonprofits deserve within our City’s policy decisions. We will continue to call on our state and federal leaders to provide relief in the weeks and months to come. Together, we are a relentless, collective force for good.
