Nonprofit New York’s Awards shine a spotlight on exceptional nonprofits

New York, NY, August 5, 2019 – Looking for some inspiration in the daily grind of nonprofit management? Nonprofit New York has chosen 13 organizations as semifinalists in its 2019 Nonprofit Excellence Awards. Through its Awards program, Nonprofit New York is moving forward diverse, stand-out nonprofits who show promising practices in nonprofit excellence. The organizations are now one step closer to becoming the winner of the Awards, and the chance to share their insights with the nonprofit sector through Nonprofit New York’s annual Best Nonprofit Conference.
The Awards, a program run by Nonprofit New York for more than a decade, is an opportunity to learn Nonprofit New York’s Key Areas of Nonprofit Excellence. The Conference gives all nonprofits a way to learn from - and aspire to - the best practices of the Award winner, and other recognized organizations.
“We’re thrilled to see these fantastic organizations moving forward in the Awards process,” said Sharon Stapel, Nonprofit New York president and executive director. “We learn so much from them, and are inspired by their work. We’re also proud that the Award’s feedback and learning focus gives nonprofits a deeper understanding of their own organization’s management practices.”
The 13 semifinalists include:
- Callen-Lorde Community Health Center (Manhattan) provides sensitive, quality health care and related services targeted to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities — in all their diversity — regardless of ability to pay.
- Chinese-American Planning Council (Manhattan) promotes social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant and low-income communities.
- Edible Schoolyard NYC (Brooklyn) partners with New York City public schools to cultivate healthy students and communities through hands-on cooking and gardening education, transforming children’s relationship with food.
- Educational Alliance, Inc. (Manhattan) brings together and partners with diverse communities in lower Manhattan, offering individuals and families high-quality, multi-generational programs that enhance their wellbeing and socioeconomic opportunities.
- Fiver Children’s Foundation (Manhattan) makes a 10-year commitment to children from underserved communities throughout New York City and central New York.
- Global Kids (Manhattan) educates, activates and inspires youth from underserved communities to take action on critical issues facing our world.
- Henry Street Settlement (Manhattan) opens doors of opportunity for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs.
- The HOPE Program (Brooklyn) empowers New Yorkers to build sustainable futures through comprehensive training, jobs, advancement, and lifelong career support.
- Literacy Inc. (LINC) (Manhattan) engages families and community members to support young readers in high needs neighborhoods.
- LitWorld (Manhattan) strengthens kids and communities through the power of their own stories.
- LiveOn NY (Manhattan) champions the rights of older adults to make New York a better place to age.
- WITNESS (Brooklyn) helps people using video and technology to protect and defend human rights.
- Youth Inc. (Manhattan) transforms the lives of New York City youth by empowering the nonprofits that serve them.
“The Clark Foundation is proud to support Nonprofit New York’s Awards program and acknowledge organizations that deserve to be recognized by their peers and the nonprofit sector for their innovative management practices,” said Doug Bauer, executive director of The Clark Foundation.
The semifinalists were selected by a 38-person expert Selection Committee who not only evaluate applicants, but share tailored feedback and expertise throughout the Awards program. From the pool of semifinalists, the Selection Committee will select one Overall Management Excellence Award winner from three finalists. Up to nine other organizations will receive Special Recognition for their cutting-edge practices in a Key Area of Nonprofit Excellence. The overall winner will receive $30,000 and the finalists $10,000 each. The winner, finalists, and specially recognized organizations will receive a scholarship for leadership programs for nonprofit professionals at the Columbia Business School Executive Education Programs in Social Enterprise. They will also be recognized and participate in Nonprofit New York’s Best Nonprofit Conference.
